The Aussie Recycling Program

Scope, formerly the Spastic Society of Victoria, has formed a partnership with the Aussie Recycling Program (ARP). The Aussie Recycling Program is a mobile phone reuse and recycle program designed to raise funds for charity and clean up the environment through the collection of unused mobile phones. Scope receives money for every mobile phone recovered. The focus of the program is reuse. All phones collected are extensively tested, repaired if necessary, refurbished and resold into developing countries where low cost handsets are needed. Mobile phones that can not be reused have their components extracted to be used as spare parts. Older phones that are seriously damaged are sent to material recycling, where materials can be recovered and put back into productive use. The remaining materials are sent for disposal in an environmentally friendly manner with licensed recyclers, with no materials going to landfill.

The mobile phone take back program is supported and endorsed by ‘Clean Up Australia’.
Why shouldn't you throw away your unused mobile phones?

Phones contain toxic metals including arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. Not only are some metals in mobile phones toxic, they do not degrade in the environment, and have been known to adversely effect health.

Third world communities that have limited telecommunications resources can benefit from using secondhand or refurbished phones to communicate. Not only can you save the environment and assist these communities, donating your phone to Scope and ARP’s mobile phone recycling program will help Scope to raise funds for severely disabled children and adults.
How are the mobile phones reused/recycled?

All phones received are recorded, sorted, tested, repaired if necessary and refurbished and then exported to developing countries. These phones help bridge the digital divide, improving the local economies and also the quality of life by providing affordable, first-time modern communications for many people. There is a tracking system in place that is able to track any phone throughout the entire process.

Phones that can not be reused are dismantled for parts to help repair phones or make up a working phone. If the parts cannot be used, ARP recovers materials for use in manufacture of other products. Older phones that are seriously damaged are sent to material recycling, where materials can be recovered and put back into productive use. The remaining materials are sent for disposal in an environmentally friendly manner. No materials go to landfill.
